Today is the officially declared birthday of the HAL9000 computer from “2001 A Space Odyssey”. Depending on whether you consider the movie or the book* as canon, ‘he’ became operational in either 1992 or 1997, so you can blame either the Bush Sr. Administration or the Clinton Administration. Actually, things like this just remind me of what a bummer it is to catch up to the future of the SciFi I enjoyed as a kid. (Just imagine how pissed I’ll be if I survive to the ‘Jetsons Era’, circa 2061)
Anyway, here are a few ways to celebrate HAL’s birthday:
- Walk up to everybody you know named Dave and tell him/them “I’m sorry, I can’t do that.”
- Group sing-alongs of “Daisy, Daisy…”
- Make a pilgrimage to Urbana, Illinios (okay, maybe a little late for that)
- Open the iPod bay doors.
- Dedicate your day to being “by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error”.
*Whadyamean, you didn’t know there was a book?
