  • I Never Meta Meta…

April 17, 2006

Generally, I do not have trouble with Mondays…

…but my usual perusal of the blogs and newsites has freaked me out.

First the story of the “cannibal blogger” (ignoring the fact that MSNBC.com used a frighteningly large mug shot of the accused child killer in the article) led to my beloved MetaFilter, which he apparently linked to on his own blog (along with Wil Wheaton, Dave Barry and AMERICAblog). And he likes Weird Al Yankovic JUST LIKE ME! After seeing how much taste in Popular Culture Media Entertainment I share with him, it got me questioning my own personality flaws – fortunately, I’m rather happy with my personality flaws, none of which include a fascination with cannibalism. And unlike me, he apparently spent a lot of time on “a comical RPG”; personally, I don’t consider Role Playing Games (or Rocket Propelled Grenades or Resource Protection Groups) to be substitutes for human contact. But then, I’ve been very content with my recent lack of human contact – and I’ve spent much of my life avoiding ten-year-olds entirely. Yes, I’ve written strange things on the internet (and NOT at the CircleK), often dealing with my personal disappointments and traumatic experiences in my past. But unlike this sick kid (and I can call him a kid, I’m nearly twice his age), I’ve been paid for many of them by a subsidiary of Bill Gates himself. However, I did notice two things in his recent activity that were sure signs of a ticking time bomb: first, he stopped making personal comments in his blog and just posted links to offbeat news stories, and second, he joined MySpace (which is quickly becoming the center of all evil on the Internet, as I expected it would when Rupert Murdock bought it). If any of my three regular readers see me doing either of those things, please immediately contact the proper authorities.

Speaking of the proper (and improper) authorities, another article has me concerned in quite a different way. An officially-designated Investigative Correspendent for Newsweek reported on a merger of two Pentagon agencies that apparently is causing some people a great deal of concern. And the less-ominous of the two agencies may have a file on ME.

DSS also maintains millions of confidential files containing the results of background investigations on defense contractors? employees.

My last 8-to-5 job was with a defense contractor; in fact, among other duties, I was primarily responsible for billing the Pentagon on one of the company’s more lucrative contracts, an ongoing analysis of the environmental impact of the missile testing at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Nothing classified (unless the effect of loud launches on local wildlife has become a state secret), but certainly involved in getting the contractor paid. And I must say that nothing in my stated duties of maximizing the company’s billables within the scope of the contract ever required me to do anything illegal, unethical or fattening. Which is why I am not now working for any other defense contractor.

I wonder if they were supposed to notify any employee who they did their background investigation on, or if it was something I just neglected to read closely when I first went to work there. And have they continued to update my file, even after my employment there ended? Or is that what this new merged uber-agency is going to end up doing? If so, I’m glad I haven’t posted much about politics in this blog. If they knew how much of an <sarcasm>America-hater</sarcasm> I am, they’d be knocking on my door. Fortunately, I’ve been rather crappy at ‘change of address’ records, so they most likely will be knocking on a door now belonging to somebody else.

And that’s why I’ll soon be starting a political blog AND a blog about my newly adopted hometown with seperate urls. And a blog with links to offbeat news stories.

AND NOW A WORD FROM SOMEBODY WHO MAY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ME...
