"MetaMe and the MetaOthers"

There was a post today on MetaFilter’s MetaTalk page questioning the term “users” on the site, as opposed to “members”, or the site-specific slang “MeFites”. (This is the kind of ‘overthinking-a-plate-of-beans’ that makes the MetaTalk fun for me.)

I didn’t discover it until over 150 comments had been made and interest had died out. I thought of a couple tongue-in-cheek terms for MetaFilter users/members, and was pleasantly surprised they had not been suggested in the previous comments.

What was suggested before I got there: Constituents. Supplicants. Lusers. Inmates. Humans (although there is some dispute regarding members with IDs like “Astro Zombie”). Consumers. Associates. Morlocks. Friends. Eyeballs (divided by 2?). Unique page impressors. Gaping maws. Whiners. Underpants (the explanation). Addicts. “Youse guys”. Puppies. ‘NEEERRRDDDSSS!!!!’ Johns. Loyal subjects. Carbon based units. Revenue generation units. Arugula munchers. Special snowflakes. Motherers (or in Web 2.0 style Mothrrs). Patrons. Sycophants. Sops. Comrades. SMEs. Yowsers. Lincolns (referring to the $5 membership fee).

The thread contained other content, including serious pro-user/anti-user discussion and lyrics from songs (my favorite). But still, there were so many good (or really bad) alternate terms that were overlooked. So, I gave them my two-cents-of-bandwidth-worth, even knowing that nobody was following the thread anymore:

Abusers. (I am a MetaFilter abuser. (Just ask the mods.) Have been since the first day the street-corner blog pusher gave me a free sample. I did spend some time in offline rehab, but it didn’t take. I’m hooked, and frankly, I’m happy with it.)

Cabalists (referring to the ‘Secret Cabal’ that some claim exist on the site, and declaring that we are all members of the Cabal… but then I worried it might sound too similar to Kaballah.)

FOMs (Firends Of Mathowie)

MetaTologists.

The Aristocrats.

Gangstahs. (Double-posters are Unoriginal Gangstahs)

Mobsters. (or MetaMobsters)

Clubbers.

The Emailing List.

Imaginary Friends.

Dorks.

The Damned.

Mes-Who-Get-Asked (from the AskMe subsite).

Filterers.

Flitterers. (hey, if Matt ever wants to set up a competitor for Twitter…)

Masons is taken, but we can be the Masonjars, Masondixons, Marshamasons, Masonadams (my fave) or Stonecutters. (although we are closer to Shriners)

Citizens.

Shareholders (or Holdsharers).

or just Victims.

Since posting that, I continue to think of various appropriate or inappropriate terms. (My mind malfunctions that way)

Snarkers.

Mutual Enemies.

Huddled Masses (or Muddled Asses).

Followers (or MetaFollowers).

Apostles, Disciples or other religious connotations.

Partners (or Pardners or Pahdnahs).

Little Rascals (an alternative to Gang references).

Assembled Multitudes.

Focus Group (or Focus Groupies).

Or just Groupies, Groupers or Groupsters.

(check back later… I can’t turn this off)

UPDATE: I included Groupers but not Gropers?

Your Turn...
