Thanks for the Laughs

I’ve been stumbling over all kinds of attempts at Thanksgiving Humor, and decided to post (all) this at MetaFilter:

Since the passing of Art Buchwald (previously on MeFi), we’re looking for something to replace his traditional Thanksgiving Humor Piece (seen here), with varying success. MeFi’s Own rstevens has a collection of LOLGRIMS, MeFi’s own Lore offers some catering services for the 21st Century (previously here – featuring the next step in Turducken evolution). Formerly MeFi’s Own Lileks has a cheap video on how to make a cheap Thanksgiving dinner. A faux-conservative blogger (who’s no Colbert) suggests renaming the holiday. The "Creatures in My Head" guy has his own disturbing version of a turkey. A video game site has games that (kinda) fit the holiday. A semi-NSFW site for dudes has the Worst Thanksgiving Dishes (not sexist, but PETA-ist and NPR-ist) But the most obvious Thanksgiving tradition (via YouTube) is the WKRP Turkey Drop (and aftermath).

Also, 23 Things That Sound Dirty At Thanksgiving, But Aren’t ("It’s Cool Whip time!"), The Naughty American (NSFW) suggests substituting "envy" for "thanks", and a Thanksgiving Horror Story that may or may not be a piece of really dark humor. Funny Thanksgiving crafts include a knit turkey hat and a centerpiece made from tampons. Better-than-most comics about cranberries, stuffing and stuffing again. And for the convenience of commenters in this thread, Thanksgiving ASCII Art! (with obnoxious MIDI sound, no surprise).

AND NOW A WORD FROM SOMEBODY WHO MAY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ME...

Dibs on 1/32 of the Drumstick

One of my few web-based idols, the humorist/artist/shuttlecock Lore Sjöberg, pretty much has Thanksgiving nailed with his column on Thanksgiving catering services for the 21st century. Some ideas are funnier than others, but the star of the show is the bird-based roast that makes the turducken look like a hummingbird: The Ostemugooturduckenuailinch!

Thanks for the Television

As promised/threatened, I have another article published at MSNBC.com, a very perishable guide to the Thanksgiving Day TV Marathons. Read. Enjoy. Learn. So when you’ve finished Thanksgiving Dinner, you can trade the sweet potatoes for couch potatoes…

Talk Turkey

I have been name-checked in the funnies again. This time, I did nothing to provoke it (unlike this incident when I answered the cartoonist’s dare – those words are indeed mine). It’s more along the lines of Wendell the Evil Taxidermist or Wendell the Foolhardy Fish, a case of one of the multitudinous single-panel attempts to be ‘the NEXT Far Side’ who know darn well that Wendell (or in the comic’s original spelling Wendel) is a funny name. I accept that. Anyway, here it is, just in time for Thanksgivery…

Not Over Construction

Okay, I have wasted enough time playing with revised designs for this (and the rest of my sad excuse for a web empire) in a semi-hidden test site. I’m going back to the way I’ve always maintained this site (Badly!), with all the plumbing and wiring exposed. Things will change. With luck, by the end of the month. And I am stopping this “I shouldn’t be posting content until the new format is ready” garbahge. I will be posting more random thoughts, self-promotion and would-you-look-at-that-crazy-thing links while all the construction is going on. And will do the same at the FunnyPaperless comics blog. Life is too short to wait for perfection. And if I get hit in the head with various construction materials, I’ll just call it an homage to Laurel & Hardy.

Wendell Who?

Yes, I’ve been away from the blog, but I am still alive (by most standards). I am, however, emotionally torn between two fictional loves: you already know about Grace the Face (in the previous item), but did you know I’ve fallen for “Samantha Who?”. And not just because I was paid to write about her. This is the one new show on the networks this year that brings out the dormant sitcom-lover in me. Yes, situation comedy CAN turn me on, and this show is quirky, original, well-performed… aw hell, read the article. Now I’m saying this about the character and the show, and it should not be misconstrued as having a crush on the star, Christina Applegate. However, I would be thoroughly flattered by any rumors of a secret affair between myself and Ms. Applegate (as well as thoroughly tickled seeing her respond to the rumor by saying “Wendell WHO?”). Of course, I cannot imagine how such a rumor might get started and I would strongly deny it. Besides, what am I gonna tell Grace?
