"Oddie But Goodie"

Today is “Odd Day”, a numerical date anomaly that happens only X times per century (1/3/05, 3/5/07, 5/7/09, 7/9/11, 9/11/13 and 11/13/15). Being a relatively old person who has always had a taste for the silly, I wanted to celebrate it with the art of Bill Oddie, from those days when he was ‘the one who looked like a hippie’ (and the one who wrote most of the music and half of the jokes) in the Pythonesque-but-kid-friendly Britcom “The Goodies”.

Here he is, solo, learning the secrets of the ancient art of Ecky Thump:

And here are all the Goodies, doing battle against all the puppets from BBC childrens’ shows (including, briefly, one Muppet Monster from Sesame Street). The show’s somewhat-too-loud laugh track went crazy whenever a “remember from when you were growing up” character appeared to do battle, but even without knowing them, it’s still prime absurdity/slapstick.

And a full episode as the Goodies take on Advertising and Marketing with all the good natured violence it deserves:

Since those wild and crazy days, Oddie has had a successful second career doing Nature Shows for the BBC. But he had to bow out of the current season of “Springwatch” to get treatment for clinical depression. I’m wishing him a very enthusiastic and GET WELL and I-know-how-it-feels-it-sucks.

ODDENDUM:
YouTube and a couple of dedicated users provide a lot of full-episode Goodiness, 10 minutes at a time (I will be adding to the list here when I get the time):

“Scotland” (yes, the Loch Ness Monster is involved) Part One, Part Two, Part Three.

“Hospital For Hire” (Goodies vs. National Health Service) Part One, Part Two, Part Three.

“2001 And A Bit” (an entertainingly inaccurate look at the then-future) Part One, Part Two, Part Three.
