Now that we’ve thoroughly eclipsed the high crimes and misdemeanors of the Watergate Scandal, the most significant legacy of the Richard Nixon presidency is obviously MONDAY HOLIDAYS.
While making Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday* fall on a Monday every year, and combining Washington and Lincoln’s Birthdays into a single holiday are simply acts of calendarial absurdity, the one time a Monday Holiday makes PERFECT sense is Labor Day, which I just realized while IRChatting with someone outside the U.S.ofA.
“Happy Labor Day” to you!” “Uh, Happy… Monday… I guess… to you.”
And why is it that, in spite of the fact that my only neighbors who did a Labor Day barbecue last year have moved away (and taken that char-broiled smell with them), I still have an inexplicable urge for hot dogs?
*prediction: in ten years, everybody will just call it MLK Day and in thirty, Civil Rights Day.
